At the biannial meeting of the "European Union of Geosciences"

23 - 27, March 1997 at Strasbourg/France
there will be held a symposium on the "History of the European
Geosciences".

For the purposes of the symposium, the scope of history will be broadly
construed. Traditionally it has been customary to weigh geological
concepts, one against the other, such as the controversy
"catastrophism
contra actualism". A fruitful line of enquiry is, however, that
concerning the backgrounds of the persons involved for it is here that
vital clues to the formulation of concepts can often be uncovered.
