Subject: Re: walter benjamin, the work of art
I have similar experiences with Benjamin's Artwork Essay, which I think
is
very important. I've had great pleasure out of reading other Benjamin
works
like "Einbahnstrasse", "Charles Baudelaire", and
"Das Passagen-Werk",
Siegfried Kracauer: "Das Ornament der Masse", and also the
contemporary
German media aesthetic theorist: Norbert Bolz and his "Am Ende der
Gutenberg-Galaxis". He has mad a book on Benjamin as well, which I
guess is
getting translated into English. Besides I'd recommend Susan
Buck-Morss,
who has written "The Dialectics of Seeing" and several essays
in the
journal "October", e.g. the brilliant: "Aesthetics and
Anaesthetics. Walter
Benjamin's Artwork Essay Reconsidered." (October, 62 Fall 1992).
And as the
last one for now: Anne Friedberg's book "Window Shopping - Cinema
and the
Postmodern" which draws heavily on the Artwork Essay.
Have a nice time reading,
