The figure of the golum goes all the way back to Enkidu, doesn't it, in
the story of Gilgamesh. In at least one version, Gilgamesh has Enkidu
fashioned from clay.
There is also a wonerful essay by Albert Goldbarth, called "The
History of
the Universe is Important to this Story," which appeared in the
New
England Review in--I think--1991 & has probably been collected. A
golum
figures in this essay, along with Amy & P. Lowell & Crazy Cat.
