Subject: 4/26 UCSB Environmental Rhetoric Workshop
On Saturday April 26, the UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center
research focus groups in the Humanities and Environment, and in
Science,
Technology, and Culture Studies will co-sponsor a day of Environmental
Communications and Rhetoric Workshops. Designed to encourage public
participation, these workshops will bring together environmental
planners, resource managers, and activists from the Santa Barbara
areaQas
well as UCSB undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to meet
with
nationally recognized scholars in the field of environmental discourse
analysis.
These problem-solving workshops will analyze rhetorical challenges
encountered by citizens, scholars, and environmental professionals.
Presentations will develop pragmatic, theoretically-informed strategies
for critical environmental  debate. Dr. M. Jimmie Killingsworth
(English, 
Texas A&M  University) and Craig Waddell (Rhetoric and Technical
Communication, Michigan Technological University) will present
their current research. They will also respond panels addressing
challenges in public discussions of environmental  policy.
