Subject: Re: N. David Mermin critiques Latour's critique of Einstein
Just to follow up on Andrew Russ' communication: there was a
"Science
Peace" conference held in Southampton this summer, between myself,
David
Mermin, and his Cornell physicist colleague Kurt Gottfried on the
science
side; sociologists Harry Collins, Trevor Pinch, and David Bloor,
historian
Simon Schaffer, and literary theorist (ne mathematician) Arkady
Plotnitsky
on the science studies side. There's a brief account of what went on
there, in _Physics World_, September 1997, p. 9 (although the
correspondent
distorted my position pretty thoroughly). Also Arkady has written a
devastating response to Gross and Levitt's ridicule of Derrida,
published
in the Feb. issue (on-line) journal _Postmodern Culture_
(http://jefferson.village.edu/pmc). Unfortunately only the current
issue
is available for free viewing, but the piece is well worth reading, if
you
have access to a subscription.
