Ecocriticism--aka "the greening of literary studies"--emerged
(in North
America) during the mid-1980s; other initiatives have included the
launches
of _The American Nature Writing Newsletter_ in 1989, an Association for
the
Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) in 1992, and the journal
_ISLE:
Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment_ in 1993.
"Ecocriticism: the greening of literary studies", was the
title of a
special session at the 1991 Modern Language Association (MLA)
conference
and the original working title of an anthology eventually published as
_The
Ecocriticism Reader: Landmarks in Literary Ecology_ (Cheryll Glotfelty
and
Harold Fromm eds. _The University of Georgia Press_ 1996).
Later this year (fall 1998) you should look for:

Sourcebook_ (Chicago and London: Fitzroy Dearborn)
