Subject: Need help researching 19th-C. Am. Factories
Dear Readers,
As part of my dissertation research, I'm attempting to investigate
accounts
of factory tourism in the American ante-bellum period. I know it was
common
for the middle class to tour English factories as early as the
1820s--Manchester was a popular venue, for instance--and it is not too
difficult to find accounts of such tours. However, I have had no luck
in
finding out if the American middle class was taking similar tours.
I would be grateful to any reader who would be willing to share their
knowledge or who might suggest directions for further research. I am
especially interested in locating books documenting tours and in
finding
out what reading, if any, tourists might have been doing to inform
themselves about economies of manufacturing, machine technologies, and
working conditions in America prior to their tours.
Please correspond with me directly, at petri.1@osu.edu.
Thank you,
Ken Petri

do you know James Buzard's book "The Beaten Path"? I don't
think it deals
precisely with the area you're interested in, but it might help in its
footnotes. You could also write to him directly; he's at M.I.T. He's
a
friend of mine, so you could use my name if you'd like.
