Subject: the truth in plain language (was quietude)
From the lead editorial in _The Sciences_ (Nov./Dec. 1998), the
magazine of the New York Academy of Sciences, written by Rodney W.
Nichols, "President and CEO" of the Academy: "Our
distinguished
magazine _The Sciences_--the publication you hold in your hands--is
one way the Academy tells the truth in plain language about science,
quashing junk and educating a general audience. But the problem of
how to combat ignorance is large and growing . . ."
Breathtaking epistemological confidence, worthy of Loyola. And the
Olympian tone--it's no wonder large numbers of Americans believe in
astrology and satanic cults--it certainly beats the bland platitudes
of the Academy. Science is so much more interesting than its
ideologues and party hacks portray it.
