compiling until I go out of town for three days just after New Year's;

I could keep it up after that, as well. Yes, it is great, isn't it?
This thing has legs, as they say in show business. It all started
with a list of greetings issued by the UW-Parkside Multicultural Affairs
flyer my wife, Vera, brought along to California.
Maybe next year, Ins'allah, we could have graphics from the various
traditions. This thing has legs, as they say in show business!

Why was Serbian zapped out of the list? I certainly understand Croats
wanting to sever Croatian from Serbo-Croatian, but Serbian

Thanks for the nice thoughts. However, why make such a divisory (?)
dialectal judgement about Spanish and Argentine?
To my ears, 'Felices Pascuas' (rather than 'PasQuas') means something
like Happy Easter (Paschal). As for 'Felices Ana Nuevo',
'felices' looks like a plural to me, while 'Ana' is the singular for
the feminine first name that translates into Engish as 'Anna'
('Year' in both Argentine and Spanish is 'año' which hope gets
through on the list: 'año' being pronounced as 'agno'.
It seems only Argentine and Spanish are included as Spanish-language
'dialects', suggesting that Argentine Spanish is unintelligible
to Spaniards or vice versa. Please note that I don't want to sound
pedantic, and that I appreciate the seasonal greetings.

Just received a Christmas card from Wales with a variant which would be
used in written messages.. Gyda dymuniadau gorau am
y Nadolig a'r Flwyddyn Newydd (Literally, With wishes best for a
Christmas and a Year New. ) Welsh is a spellers nightmare, since
the words mutate at the beginning as well as at the end for a whole
variety of different reasons!! I have greatly enjoyed looking
over the list you published and checking for example the Irish Gaelic
with the Welsh - and wondered how the Scottish and
Breton veriosn would compare. Its interesting to see the language
families in there - although the Navajo is a very funny addition in
its borrowing! I might have an Oneida version in my notes from a class
I took a few years back and if I can locate it I will also
forward that to you - maybe in time for next year. Best wishes,

I am writing in response to your Hebrew translation of
"Holiday Greetings." I would like to make one grammatical
(spelling) correction and one "cultural sensitivity"
observation.
1. The phrase for "happy new year" in Hebrew is not
"shena tova" but rather "shana Tova." 2. The
phrase "mo'adim lesimkha"
traditionally refers to the three pilgrimage holidays (Sukot [Feast of
the Tabernacles], Pesach [Passover] and Shavuot
[Feast of Weeks].) Needless to say, these refer to Jewish holidays. In
my opinion, it is therefore inappropriate to apply the term
"mo'adim lesimkha" to the Christian New Year. The phrase
"mo'adim lesimcha" is not even used during the Jewish New
Year
(which falls around September according to the Christian calendar, or
Tishrei according to the Jewish calendar.) The proper
greeting for the Jewish New Year is simply, "shana
tova"-never mo'adim lesimkha. I do appreciate the
international spirit of
H-Net. I also think it is important to make sure that cultural and
religious mirepresentations be avoided. Thank you for your

will be in April 1999. In the meantime, Muslims all
