Subject: Web Resource Database
Hi,
You may know me as "that guy who tries to start impossible
conversations" on
the LITSCI-L list. Here's another curveball!
You may also know I created a "web database for literature and science
syllabi" a number of years ago.
If any of you have looked at it, you know it was never very successful,
despite generous plugging in SLS publications and elsewhere.
I have finally "frozen" that database and I am experimenting with - ta
da! - a
new one:
http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/sls/web/
This one is a "dynamic web resource database". How's that work?
It's dynamic, because it is open to anyone to submit a link. (If it's
discovered by mauraders, I can throttle down that freedom.)
It's also dynamic, because the submitter defines keywords that apply to
the
entry. The keywords are databased separately, and can be reused by
others. The
effect, I hope, will be that as more and more entries are submitted (I
can
always dream!), the entries will also be ever more tightly woven
together by
shared keywords.
The idea is to database every possible kind of web site: syllabi,
journals,
articles, interesting departmental sites, vibrant home pages, what have
you.
Please come try out the site and let me know what you think. I'm
experimenting
with this resource in parallel with other potential uses of the same
simple
database structure (under the rubric "knowledge web") and would
appreciate
your comments.
Wayne
P.S. I borrowed an SLS graphic for this endeavor. Somebody will let me
know if
they don't like that, I hope!
