          Travel Writing /Writing Travel:
          Private Texts and Public Contexts

          forum proposed for the
          Convention of the Midwest Modern Language Association
          November 2-4, 2000
          Hyatt Regency Crown Center
          Kansas City, Missouri

  Possible topics include the genres of travel writing; issues of
publication, including the editing and revision
  of private letters and diaries; the development of travel writing as a
genre; travel writing and its relation to
  autobiography; travel fiction and non-fiction; the travel writer's
responsibility to self vs. responsibility to the
  place; travel writing and "truth value."

  Submit proposal, abstract, or paper by April 20, 2000 to:
