Call for Submissions:

A Special Issue of the Journal of Medical Humanities
Disability and Medicine: Beyond the Medical Model
Special Issue Editors: Martha Stoddard Holmes, Ph.D.
Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Ph.D.

Possible sites of inquiry for submissions include, but are not limited
to:

- -textualizations/textual disruptions of the medical model of
disability
- -disability culture/studies and medical culture/studies (art, lit,
film,
case studies, doctors' conventions, grand rounds, imaging technologies,
medical journals, advertising, etc.)
- -cross-cultural narrative exchanges:  disability culture tells doctor
stories; medical culture tells disability stories
- -writing disability into "literature and medicine"
- -disability, medicine,  and literary criticism(s)
- -pathography/autopathography studies and their points of contact with
disability/disability studies)
- -Foucault, feminist critiques of science, queer studies, postcolonial
studies, film studies, etc.
- -cultural histories of issues in disability and medicine
- -disability and ethics (narrative ethics/feminist ethics/care
ethics/bioethics)
- -disability, medicine, and gender
- -doctors, nurses, and medical/nursing students with disabilities
- -disability, medicine, and pedagogy (teaching disability; teaching
disabled;
disabling pedagogies; transforming pedagogies through disability;
disability
studies)

Submission Deadline: May 15, 2001

Manuscript length should be between 5,000-6,000 words. Manuscripts
should
be
typed, double-spaced, on one side of  8.5" by 11" paper.  Please submit
three copies, including all accompanying notes.  The title page should
include the title, name, address, telephone, e-mail and fax number if
possible, and institutional affiliation if applicable. The author's name
should not appear on any of the text pages.  Accepted manuscripts, after
revisions, will be submitted on personal computer disks, and prepared
according to the
MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.
