"Writing the Sciences"

CRAFT, CRITIQUE, CULTURE: The University of Iowa's 2nd Annual
Interdisciplinary Conference on Writing in the Academy, April 12-14,
2002

How scientific thought, method, and ideology are expressed in prose was
a popular Enlightenment concern, and it remains a pertinent scholarly
question today. This panel seeks to investigate this question in a
number
of forms and historical contexts, including, but not limited to, the
following:

* The origins of, development of, or current influences on the
scientific
essay
* Rhetorical analyses of scientific thought, method, and ideology
* Examining the craft, style, and performative aspects of scientific
writing

* Historicizing the writer-scientist divide
* The representation of science in literature
* The representation of science in the visual arts
* The representation of famous scientists in literature, film, and
television
* The popularization of the sciences
* Science and gender
* Science and publishing: bridging academic and popular audiences
