Subject: CfP: Workshop on cultural studies / human-computer interaction
Hello SLSers,
There has recently been a growing interest in literary theory and
cultural studies in the human-computer interaction (HCI) community.
This year, we will be hosting a workshop on the use of cultural
analysis
for technology design for the home at the major international HCI
conference, CHI. We are seeking submissions from, among others,
cultural studies practicioners who bring their expertise to the
question
of technology design. Please see the attached CFP and feel free to
forward it to anyone you think may be interested. Do note that to
attend the workshop you must register for the conference, which in the
tradition of technical conferences has a substantial registration fee
(reduced for students).
Cheers,
Phoebe Sengers

Call For Participation
CHI 2003 Workshop:
Designing Culturally Situated Technologies For The Home
(http://www.cs.cornell.edu/People/Sengers/DomesticTech03/)
Through the ownership and use of particular technologies and artefacts
we make statements about our selves, our values and our
culture. Nowhere is this clearer than in the home, which is widely
recognised as a complex and diverse design environment. Critical
readings of the social context of use and the codification of meaning
can generate innovative approaches to design problems. This workshop
will consider how designers do, can, and should integrate cultural
analysis in their technologies
Issues of interest include the following:
- - Design techniques that use cultural and social analysis to inform
the design of new home based digital products.
- - Analytical techniques for studying the cultural and political
assumptions that are embodied in current domestic technology.
- - Methods and techniques for designing across cultural boundaries.
We plan to cover the following general topics: theory, drawn from
various disciplines; field studies and experiments; practice, through
case studies of products and experimental designs; technique, and the
design process. The workshop format will include a presentation by
each participant. In addition each participant will lead a discussion
of the issues raised by another participant's paper. We encourage
participation from a wide range of disciplines including Computer
Science, Product Design, Psychology, Social Sciences, Literary and
Cultural Studies.
Please submit a one- or two-page position paper (as a Word or PDF file)
outlining your interest in this topic to
M.Blythe@psych.york.ac.uk. Position papers must be received by 17th
January 2003. Participants will be notified of selection by 7th
February 2003.

Subject: oxford round table
Hi all:
Has anyone heard of the Oxford Round Table? I just received an
invitation for a meeting in Mar/April, about gender discrimination
and employment, and don't know a thing about this institution. 35
people are invited, and it looks a bit like an honor, except that the
cost ($2795 plus transportation) for five days seems a bit steep and
thus I'm inclined to think it may be a sham. Any info would be quite
helpful.
