CALL FOR PAPERS

Green Letters

Deadline: 1 October 2003

Green Letters, the journal of ASLE-UK (the Association for the Study of
Literature and Environment, UK Branch), is devoted to exploring
interdisciplinary interfaces between humans and the natural environment.

Articles are invited for our 2003 fall edition that consider the
relations
between scientific theory and literature, as well as the scientific
foundations of literary theory, especially concerning postcolonialism
and
ecocriticism. Literary, historical, aesthetic and cultural studies
approaches, sociological and anthropological studies, as well as
perspectives from the scientific disciplines, are encouraged. Possible
subjects of exploration include: ecofeminist theory and the biological
body;
the impact of Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis on literature; evolution and
literary theory; Darwinian analysis of specific texts; fusing deep
ecology
and quantum mechanics; discourses on scientific innovation and
perceptions
of the natural environment.

We would also like to encourage contributions of book reviews and
thematically related creative nonfiction.

Green Letters is a peer-reviewed journal and all articles will be
subject to
the usual refereeing process. Each article should be accompanied by an
abstract and a brief biographical note. Articles should be typed double
spaced, with references in the Harvard Style and substantive footnotes
at
the end of the article. Manuscript length should be between 4,000 and
6,000
words.

Submissions should be made via email with a MS Word attachment of the
document. Please send submissions and any inquiries to the Green
Letters
editorial board at GreenLetters@ntlworld.com

	TRAVEL SUBSIDIES & ESSAY PRIZES
	POETRY
	MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS & FORM

SLS 2003, AUSTIN, TEXAS
Rethinking Space and Time Across Science, Literature, and the
Arts, the seventeenth annual conference of the Society for Literature
and Science, will be held at the Marriott at the Capitol in Austin,
Texas,
on October 23-26, 2003. The call for papers generated an enthusiastic
response, and presenters from the US, Europe, Australia, and Japan are
scheduled.
Conference Program
The conference will begin on Thursday evening, October, 23.
Concurrent sessions from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. will be followed by the
opening reception. On Friday and Saturday, four sets of concurrent
1-1/2 hour sessions will be scheduled. The Harry Ransom Humanities
Research Center at the University of Texas will host a reception before
Friday night's plenary address by Timothy Ferris, ?¨the best science
writer of his generation.?Æ Ferris will discuss the cosmological
implications
of dark matter. Saturday's program also features the members'
business lunch and the SLS dance, both included in the conference fee;
the Earl Poole Ball band will perform at the dance. A conference
wrap-up meeting will follow two more rounds of sessions Sunday
morning, with the conference ending midday.
Hotel
The conference will be held at the Austin Marriott at the Capitol, 701
East 11th St., Austin, TX 78701. The weekend of the conference will
be a busy one: attendees who wish rooms in the conference hotel
should reserve them as early as possible. Rooms are available at a
special SLS conference rate of $124 for single, double, triple, and
quad.
Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-228-9290 and mentioning
the Society for Literature and Science to get the conference rate.
Reservations should be made before September 1; rates and
availability cannot be guaranteed after that date

Conference attendees who wish to arrive up to two nights before the
conference begins Thursday evening or to stay up to two nights after its
end on Sunday at midday should e-mail Event Manager Nicole
Gruenebaum (nicole.gruenebaum@marriott.com) to ascertain
availability of rooms at the conference rate. Attendees seeking
possible
roommates are encouraged to make use of the SLS listserv (see last
page of newsletter) to locate others also looking for roommates.
Conference Registration will be handled by an Austin firm that
operates on-line and via e-mail. If conference attendees do not wish to
register on-line (the preferred mode), they must supply an e-mail
address to receive confirmation of their mailed or faxed registration (a
registration form is enclosed). Paper confirmations cannot be provided.

On-line registration for the conference will close at the end of Friday,
October 17. Attendees are urged to register well before then. (The
conference fee rises from $110 to $130 after September 28.) On-site
registration (and check-in for all attendees) will be open on Thursday,
October 23, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday, October
24-25, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The conference website is at http://english.ttu.edu/sls2003/. The
registration page is
http://english.ttu.edu/sls2003/ConferenceRegis.html.
Links to SLS conference sites, including Austin, are also available at
the
Virginia Tech SLS site at www.litsci.org.
Media requests: The SLS is committed to experimentation in new
media. However, because of increases in media costs charged by
hotels, we strongly encourage presenters needing digital projectors to
bring their own. Please request LCD projectors only if it is absolutely
essential to your presentation, and make that request when you submit
your abstract. We hope to be able to provide all equipment at no cost,
but depending upon demand it may be necessary to charge for use of
digital projectors and/or VCR/monitors.

SLS TRAVEL AWARDS
SLS provides a limited number of travel awards for underfunded
individuals attending the annual conference. Members of SLS who
participate in the annual conference may apply for travel subventions.
An applicant should email name, title of SLS presentation, any
information about funding for the conference, and an indication of how
long one has been a member to Carol Colatrella at
carol.colatrella@lcc.gatech.edu by September 1. SLS officers will review
the applications and approve funds for one to three individuals. Each
person awarded funds will be presented with a $200 check at the
conference.

SLS ESSAY PRIZES

The Bruns Essay Prize, in honor of Edward F. Bruns, is awarded
annually to the best essay written by a graduate student member of the
Society for Literature and Science. Graduate students wishing to have
their essays considered for the $250 prize should submit them by
September 1 to N. Katherine Hayles, Department of English, University
of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1530.

The Schachterle Essay Prize: Lance Schachterle, SLS founding
president, has established an annual prize of $250 in honor of his
parents to recognize the best new essay on literature and science
written in English by a nontenured scholar. Eligible authors wishing to
submit essays (published or accepted for publication) should send them
prior to September 1 to the SLS Executive Director, Carol Colatrella,
LCC, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA 30332-0165; please
label envelope "Schachterle Submission."
Note: all of the awards described above are presented during the
Business Meeting of the annual fall conference. One may submit only
one entry to one of the two essay prize competitions.

PLEASE RENEW YOUR SLS MEMBERSHIP & PAY FOR ANY YEARS
OF LAPSED MEMBERSHIP:

Because Configurations volumes for 2002 and 2003 have been delayed,
Johns Hopkins University Press Journals Division could not sent out
2002 and 2003 renewal notices to SLS members. However, dues notices
will be mailed to expired members soon.

Note that while all SLS members for each chronological year will receive
the appropriate volume of the journal (albeit according to the delayed
production schedule), you must have paid for all years to receive all
journals.

Active SLS members can access Configurations online through the
society's Hopkins URL at http://sls.press.jhu.edu. Your membership
number and your last date of active membership appear on the mailing
label of this newsletter.

All conference participants in SLS 2003 in Austin should pay for
membership for 2003. Ballots for the 2003 election will be sent to all
2002 and 2003 members in a separate summer mailing.

If you have questions about your membership, need to change your
address, or wish to renew via phone or email, please contact JHU
Journals at 1-800-548-1784 (M-F) or at jlorder@jhupress.jhu.edu. To
facilitate renewal by mail, a form is included in this newsletter;
please send the form to Johns Hopkins University Press, PO Box
19966, Baltimore, MD 21211-0966.

The editors of Configurations anticipate catching up with the production
schedule in late 2003 or early 2004; they thank you for your patience.
Submissions are always welcome and should be directed to Hugh
Crawford, LCC, Georgia Tech, 686 Cherry St., Atlanta, GA 30332-0165
(hugh.crawford@lcc.gatech.edu).

SLS is a small society that depends on membership dues to support the
journal, newsletter, and annual travel subsidies to the conference for
underemployed members.

Thank you for your support.

POETRY:
An Evensong

I remember
what I read
in some
medical journals.

They said
there are symptoms
that include
memory loss,

and loss
of orientation
and impairment
of judgement,

and loss
of control
over the functions
of the body.

I do remember
what I read
in some
medical journals.

Will you turn
the TV on?
Did I miss
the evening news?

No, honey,
you did not miss.
You did not miss
the evening news.
