     Mephistos 2005 Conference
     updated cfp for SLSA 2005

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 22:09:47 -0500
From: "Fielding, Heather"
Subject: Mephistos 2005 Conference

The graduate community at Brown University, in association with the =
Faculty Committee on Science & Technology Studies, is proud to host =
MEPHISTOS 2005, an international conference on the history, philosophy,
=
and sociology of science, technology and medicine. MEPHISTOS began in =
1981 as a regional event organized by graduate students at Princeton =
University and the University of Pennsylvania. It has since grown into a
=
widely attended annual conference hosted by universities throughout the
=
United States and Canada. Throughout its twenty-three-year history, the
=
motivation behind MEPHISTOS has remained the same: it is an important =
opportunity for graduate students to present papers, participate in =
discussions, and collaborate with other students in the =
interdisciplinary field of science studies.

MEPHISTOS 2005 will be held on March 5-6 in List 120 on Brown's main =
campus, located in the heart of Providence's historic East Side. This =
year's program features papers and discussions on the following topics:
=
media and their messages; faith in science; public health in modern =
America; judgment and values in 20th-century scientific thought; and =
science and the public. The conference program, paper abstracts, and =
local information are available at www.brown.edu/Students/Mephistos.

This event has been generously funded by the Society for the History of
=
Technology and the following sponsors at Brown University: the Graduate
=
School, Humanities Center, Faculty Committee on Science and Technology =
Studies, Office of the President, John Nicholas Brown Center, Graduate =
Student Council, Department of History of Art and Architecture, =
Department of Philosophy, Department of Anthropology, and Department of
=
American Civilization.

MEPHISTOS is free and open to the public; we ask that those who plan to
=
attend the conference email the Chair of the Organizing Committee at =
mephistos@brown.edu .

Dear litsci-l: Joe Tabbi and I have set up a dedicated e-mail =
destination for all slsa 2005 submissions and program correspondence: =
2005.slsa@gmail.com. I've attached to this note a revised version of =
the cfp with that new text, and also pasted it below.

Thanks for referring to this version of the call, and updating those =
already disseminated if possible. We look forward to your paper and =
panel proposals, and will see you in Chicago this fall. All best, Bruce

Clarke

The Nineteenth Annual Conference of the

Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts

Chicago, IL, November 10-13, 2005

EMERGENT SYSTEMS, COGNITIVE ENVIRONMENTS

Call for Papers and Panels

Deadline for Submission: May 1, 2005

Site Chair: Joseph Tabbi, University of Illinois at Chicago

Program Chair: Bruce Clarke, Texas Tech University

Papers are invited in all science-oriented topics, especially those =
related to

emergence and cognition as these themes appear, variously, in

science, literature, technology, and the arts.

Individuals may submit abstracts of 150 words, and proposals for panels,
=
usually composed of 3-4 speakers plus discussion in a 1-1/2 hour =
session, with specifications for any AV or Internet needs given at this
=
time. In addition to standard formats,

we encourage innovative proposals for papers, panels, round-table =
discussions, and any non-traditional formats. The circulation of papers
=
among panelists before presentation is encouraged. Sessions involving =
speakers and/or respondents that

transcend disciplinary boundaries are particularly welcome.

To emphasize the explicit inclusion of the arts, as indicated by the new
=
organization name, SLSA, this year we are inviting artists to speak or =
perform in hour-long morning and evening plenary sessions. Scholars =
familiar with the work of each artist are also being invited to speak in
=
these plenary sessions, and may form panel streams around the themes =
introduced in the sessions.

The conference will be held at the historic tower of the =
Intercontinental Hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, in view of the =
Wrigley Building and the Chicago River.

A reception will be held nearby at the University of Illinois at =
Chicago,

in a venue overlooking a new landscape installation by Vito Acconci.

Speakers must be 2005 members of SLSA. To join or to renew membership, =
please go to =
https://www.press.jhu.edu/cgi-bin/associations/sls_membership.cgi, or =
call Johns Hopkins University Press Journals at 800 548 1784 (US & =
Canada only, all others call 410 516 6987). Mon-Fri 8-am-5pm FAX 410 516
=
6968. Email: jlorder@jhupress.jhu.edu.

Please submit abstracts and proposals via e-mail (in plain text, without
=
attachments) to: 2005.slsa@gmail.com. Full contact information for =
each participant should be included with all papers and proposals.

The Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts fosters the =
multi-disciplinary study of the relations among literature and language,
=
the arts, science, medicine, and technology.
