Subject: Call for Participants -- Urban Ecology at SLSA 2005
*** Call for Participants ***
Panel / Roundtable for SLSA 2005 Conference in Chicago (Nov. 10-13)
Provisional Title: "Perspectives on Urban Ecology -- Science, =
Literature, and the Nature of Cities"
Topic: I would like to organize an interdisciplinary panel (or =
roundtable; see below) focusing on urban ecology and the nature of =
cities for the 2005 meeting of the Society for Literature, Science, and
=
the Arts in Chicago. Participants may address matters of science, =
literature, environmental history, politics, ethics, and/or rhetoric in
=
their exploration of urban environments. Possible topics for =
presentation and/or discussion include urban natural history writing; =
ecological restoration or remediation in urban areas; the rhetoric of =
urban ecology; artistic/scientific representations of nature in cities;
=
the characterization of science in urban nature areas, parks, or =
museums; and the idea of urban "wilderness." Other topic suggestions, =
as well as ideas on how to frame the overall proposal, are more than =
welcome. This panel will be part of a "green stream" of =
environment/ecology-focused sessions at SLSA.
Format: Depending on the number of interested participants, this =
session can be either a regular panel of 3-4 speakers who make =
presentations of 15 minutes each, or a roundtable of 4 or more =
participants who make 5 minute position statements which are then =
followed by moderated discussion.
Deadline: ***Wednesday, April 27th*** for email replies to Mike Bryson,
=
mbryson@roosevelt.edu. The formal proposal for the session is due to =
conference organizers by Friday, May 1, 2005.
Process: If you are interested in participating in this session, please
=
email Mike Bryson ASAP with a one-paragraph position statement =
addressing any of the above topics (or one you think appropriate), your
=
preference for either a panel or roundtable format, and your full =
contact information (name, affiliation, mailing address, email, phone).
=
I will acknowledge your reply and compile a formal proposal =
incorporating participants' ideas for submission on May 1st.

It's excellent that the NPG is doing analysis of the Flower Portrait
(see http://www.npg.org.uk/live/prelsearching.asp )I have no doubt that
material analysis can provide highly convincing evidence about the date
of the painting. But for such evidence to be convincing, it has to be
made publicly available in sufficient detail for independent review. I
don't think that general claims about what experts have found and a TV
presentation is convincing evidence. It's rather a characteristically
contemporary means of arguing from authority. Experts? On TV? It must
be true!
So I look forward to the exhibit in 2006. I hope that it will set a
good example of open science on this issue of intense cultural interest.
