Dear Colleague,
I write to draw your attention to the Summit on Digital Tools to be held
=
at the University of Virginia from September 28 to 30, 2005. It will
begin =
on Wednesday evening, September 28, with a keynote speech and
discussion. =
Discussions will continue on Thursday and end mid-afternoon Friday. =
Discussion topics and the structure of the sessions will be determined =
based on the issue papers submitted by participants.
The summit will assess the state of development of digital tools for =
humanities research, as well as the effectiveness of the supporting and
=
integrating cyberinfrastructure. Tools serve many purposes: analysis, =
creative development of new material, education, presentation, as well
as =
productivity enhancement. Text-based tools are perhaps the most
widespread =
and familiar among humanities scholars, but the summit will address =
textual and non-textual media (audio, video, 3-D and 4-D visualization).
We are hoping to attract to the conference 30-50 leaders in humanities
and =
social science tool development. The goal is not to have the kind of
"show =
& tell" of current projects that is typical of conferences these days: =
indeed, we do not anticipate having any demonstrations of tool projects.
=
Instead, we hope to have lively discussion and debate about the state of
=
the field, our immediate needs, and our long-term dreams. The number of
=
participants is limited in order to create an environment in which =
everyone has a chance to contribute and feels comfortable about doing
so. =
If the interests of the invitees fall into unrelated categories of tools
=
(e.g., tools for text analysis vs. tools for creating and exploring =
virtual environments), we will run parallel sessions with a specific =
focus. But we also anticipate having some plenary sessions, since =
important aspects of tool-making and tool-using cut across all our
various =
disciplines.
We will be paying for participants' room and board, and we also have
some =
limited travel funds available for those who need them.
You can find out more about the summit at:
http://www.iath.virginia.edu/dtsummit/
The deadline for applications is June 20, 2005. It is very easy to
apply: =
just write a one-page position paper on some aspect of digital tools for
=
humanists and social scientists. See the Web site for details.
Yours,
Bernie
P.S. Please feel free to circulate this to other interested parties!

I am a graduate student in CompLit at Catholic University in
Washington, DC, collecting information about how SF is taught in
college. The results of this survey will appear in a forthcoming
collection of essays on media and SF, tentatively titled "One
Universe?". The editors are Lorna Jowett and Nick Heffernan of
University College Northampton, UK.
Once I've compiled it, the data will be available to the participants.
Thanks for your time and consideration,
Garrison LeMasters
**Survey of Science Fiction in the College Classroom**
We are seeking input from college faculty and instructors who have
taught courses organized around the topic "science fiction." Diversity
of subject area or departmental sponsorship is welcomed: faculty who
have taught science fiction-themed courses for departments of Natural
Science or Philosophy, for example, are encouraged to participate.
This web-based survey, which comprises 25 questions and may be
completed in under 20 minutes, seeks to gather basic curricular data
from instructors across disciplinary boundaries. Results of the Survey
of Science Fiction in the College Classroom will be published in a
forthcoming collection; some data will be made available online.
To participate in the survey, please email Garrison LeMasters:
survey@colophon.org
or register at http://www.scifi101.org/survey/index.php?sid=1
**Survey Participation**
While the survey is apolitical, each participant's responses will
remain anonymous unless she states otherwise. Any articles or
publications related to data from the survey will be objective: survey
participants will never be singled-out for criticism.
In addition to participating in the survey, we encourage participants
to submit material relevant to the course: e.g., syllabi and reading
lists; please do not submit copyrighted or otherwise publicly-available
material.
Participants have the option of receiving a copy of survey results once
they are made available.
