Joe,
I received your post yesterday about the necessity of finding a new home
for
the litsci-l list and have contacted the chair of the English department
here
at West Virginia University about the possibility of it being moved
here. Our
College of Arts & Sciences recently purchased a Sparc 20, rather
appropriately
named Hermes :), which is being used as the server for the various
departments
contained within the college. I am sure that this machine would be able
to
handle the list as long as there is no opposition to its being there.
(Although I can't imagine there being much since the chair of our
department,
Pat Conner, is thoroughly engrossed with humanities computing). I will
let
you know as soon as I get a response from Pat (he's off Wednesdays).
Please let me know if you think this is a viable option.

Science as Culture is an unmoderated forum for critical discussion of
the
cultural aspects of all forms of expertise, for example, the impact of
science on culture, how culture represents it, the culture of various
forms
of expertise, the theory of knowledge, the impact of science on
culture,
including film, video, music, writing, the internet and other
communications media, etc.; changing concepts of nature, life and human
nature, new technologies, gender aspects of science, racism, elitism,
educational theories, you name it.
Announcements of conferences, publications, jobs, issues in the
relevant
fields are also welcome.
Science as Culture is affiiliated with the hard copy journal of the
same
name published by Process Press Ltd.

MID-SOUTH PHILOSOPHY CONFERENCE
The 20th annual Mid-South Philosophy Conference is scheduled for
Friday afternoon and Saturday -- February 23-24, 1996 -- at The
University of Memphis, USA. Papers on any topic of philosophic
interest
are welcomed. Papers are limited to 30 minutes reading time (normally,
12 double-spaced pages). Send TWO printed copies with a 100-word
abstract (if possible, include an ASCII copy on a computer diskette)

be running parallel sessions. Please encourage students to attend and
submit papers.

MEPHISTOS was created for and designed by graduate students in order to
provide a forum for fostering communication between grad students at
different universities, and to offer a chance for lively interchange
between those involved in the fields of Science Studies, broadly
defined.
In particular, the conference offers a stress-free environment in which
to
present research and discuss topics and trends in the field. We
strongly
encourage students working in other non-HPS departments whose work
touches
on areas in science studies to come and present their work in this
context.
Since we want to make this event ACCESSIBLE to graduate students on
limited budgets, we will provide as many people as possible with FREE
lodging on the couches, etc., of area graduate students. This limited
space is on a first-come, first-served basis, with those giving papers
receiving priority. There are some inexpensive rooms reserved in
graduate housing (~$30 a night) and we will offer a list of area
lodging
upon request. Travel information is also available upon request, and
we
will also attempt to provide coordinated carpool contacts to those
driving
along the same route, if registrations are received early enough.
1 Funds permitting, travel subsidies which may become available will
be
issued on the basis of the order in which we receive your registration
fee.

RATIONALE: sci.philosophy.natural
sci.philosophy.natural will meet a long-standing demand for a moderated
newsgroup for the scholarly discussion of and publications on ancient
natural philosophy (science) without flames and without unfounded
'speculative' postings. The proposed newsgroup would not replace any
existing groups. There is a small overlap with *many* existing
newsgroups
and mailing lists in that subjects appropriate to
sci.philosophy.natural
are occasionally discussed there. One purpose of sci.philosophy.natural
is
to bring these discussions under one roof to facilitate
interdisciplinary
scholarship. In some cases, this may result in offloading some traffic
from
high volume newsgroups and mailing lists. It would still leave any and
all
posters the forums that currently exist, so there is no question of
denying
anyone an outlet for their ideas. The small number of newsgroups and
mailing lists which regularly deal with topics appropriate to
sci.philosophy.natural may regard the proposed newsgroup as a means of
publishing finished articles after the rounds of specialist comment and

A Graduate Review of Literary Studies
_Henry Street_, formerly known as _Critical Mass_, is in its fifth
year.
We aim to provide an international forum for graduate students of
English
and related disciplines. The editors, themselves graduate students,
are
committed to providing their colleagues with the opportunity to publish
their own work and to read their work of others in their field.
_Henry Street_ invites contributions of critical essays, short fiction
and
poetry from graduate students in English or a related discipline. We
also
welcome essays on pedagogy, the job market, graduate programs, and
other
topics of interest to graduate students. We aim especially to publish
and
promote a species of criticism that, in the words of one of our
contributors, "combines the personal with the scholarly."
_Henry Street_ is indexed by the MLA.

Essays should not exceed 7000 words, and must follow MLA guidelines for
citation and presentation. All submissions, except poetry, should be
double-spaced on standard 8.5" x 11" bond. To facilitate our

manuscript.
Send two copies of submissions, and include a self-addressed return
envelope accompanied either by Canadian stamps or international reply
coupons. Manuscripts submitted without SASE cannot be returned. The
cover
letter must indicate the author's degree status and university
affiliation.
