SOCIETY FOR LITERATURE AND SCIENCE
ANNUAL MEETINGS GUIDELINES COMMITTEE
FIRST REQUEST FOR INPUT FROM SLS MEMBERS
Contact: Frank Durham fed@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu
Department of Physics
Tulane University
New Orleans LA 70118 (504) 865-5520.
As Chair of the newly-organized Annual Meetings Guidelines Committee of
SLS,
I am asking for comments and suggestions from SLS members. This
committee
will be working on problems related to improved logistics for the
planning
and realization of SLS annual meetings. The Committee was defined by
the
SLS Executive Board at the November 1994 meeting in New Orleans. It is
advisory to the Executive Committee and its concerns include long-range
planning (sites, hotels, etc.), efficiency of planning, distribution of
general and local responsibilities, and other related matters.
In this initial phase I am interested in members' comments on any aspect
of
past annual meetings, or suggestions of any sort concerning future
meetings.
All this is with a view to making the annual meetings --which are
already
highly successful, but of course are not problem-free--more rewarding
for
the membership.
Thanks. I will try to answer all reasonable messages.

Subject: Re: SLS conference
Your paper in Liz Hart's panel has been accepted for presentation at
the
1995 Annual Meeting of the Society for Literature and Science. It has
been
scheduled as part of a session that will take place on Saturday,
November
4, from 5:30-7:00 PM. (The panel organized by Tom Weissert, in which
you
will participate, will be on Sunday from 10:15-11:45 AM.) The
preliminary
program/registration brochure is currently in the production stage, and
will be mailed out sometime in June. In the meantime, please take note
of
the following:
1. I must have the title of your paper by May 25 at the latest to
include
in the program brochure.
2. Please keep in mind SLS guidelines/traditions, that presentations
should
be in the form of oral summaries lasting no more than 12 minutes and
that
there should be no reading of papers (participants are encouraged to
bring
copies of papers for distribution to interested attendees).
3. Please submit an abstract that rigorously conforms to the following
guidelines: Title of talk, speaker's name and affiliation, all centered
and
with no spaces between lines; followed by a space and the body of the
abstract, which may be left-only or left-and-right justified. A
12-point
font size should be used and the entire abstract must remain on a
single
page. The abstract must be received in this format by September 15 to
be
included in the book of abstracts to be distributed at the Conference.
Submission by e-mail is encouraged, as we can easily download and
reformat;
alternatively use regular mail (not fax) to the address below.
4. Requests for audio-visual equipment should be sent in writing (or by
fax
or e-mail) to the same address, also by September 15.
5. Membership in SLS for the year October 1, 1995-September 30, 1996 is
required for participation in the Conference. A membership form will
be
included in the brochure to be sent next month.
Program changes, abstracts, A-V requests and any further questions
should
be addressed to:

Subject: confusion (mine)
Sorry to clutter up the net, but...last week I was sending
announcements
about papers accepted for the November SLS meeting, and one of them
mistakenly was posted to litsci-l--I wasn't paying attention and replied
to
a contributor's earlier message that actually had itself been
posted--so
the reply went to the list. (That seems to happen to me sometimes and
not
others--I haven't sorted out when or why.) Anyway, I've had MANY
responses
from people who couldn't remember submitting a paper, or... I tried to
post a correction last week, but I'm still getting responses, so I guess
it
didn't make it? I'll try again. Everyone who submitted a paper and
who
provided an e-mail address should have gotten a reply last week. If
you
didn't submit anything, or if you think that extra message didn't apply
to
you--IT DIDN'T. If anyone is still confused, feel free to send me (NOT
THE
LIST) another message.

Newsgroups: soc.history.science
Subject: NSF funding for history of science threatened
Date: 17 May 1995 17:41:14 -0400
Summary: NSF funding for History of Science to be Eliminated
Keywords: Congress NSF Budget Eliminate Human Sciences
Scientists in the Human Sciences need help of all Scientists:
According to an EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT from the Federation of
Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences the House
Budget Committee has recommended the complete elimination of
NSF research funding for Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology,
Linguistics, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Cognitive
Science, Decision, Risk and Management Sciences, History of
Science and Statistical Research for the Behavioral and
Social Sciences--as NSF's contribution to balancing the
Federal budget.
This undoubtedly is a ploy to divide the sciences by playing
off the natural sciences against the human sciences.
According to FBPCS, while there will undoubtedly have to be cuts in the
NSF budget to achieve a balanced budget, the present proposal
to selectively wipe out the behavioral and social sciences goes
far beyond simply saving money. This is the most important
crises these sciences have faced since the early 1980's when
President Reagan sought to eliminate these sciences.
Action on this will happen quickly. The Budget Committee
approved the budget package on May 11. The vote on the
package by the full house may take place between May 15 and 18.
In all likelihood the budget resolution will pass the House
unaltered, The Appropriations Committee will be bound
by the spending limits imposed by the Budget Committee.
But it will not be bound by the particular cuts recommended
by the Budget Committee! Unfortunately the House leadership
has also made it known that no program that lacks a current
authorization will be funded. The National Science Foundation
is not currently authorized. Efforts to pass its authorization
failed in the Senate last year. The House Science Committee
(202-225-6371; 2320 Rayburn House Office Building) under
its chair, Robert Walker (R-PA) has said that as soon as
the budget is passed, the Science Committee will proceed to
report its authorizations which include, among other things,
NSF, NASA and the research programs of the Department of
Energy. Robert Walker is also the Vice-Chair of the Budget
Committee, and he played a key role in determining the
selective cuts at NSF (eliminating the above social and
behavioral sciences from funding). At a news conference on
May 12, Walker said that the Directorate containing the
research programs [in the social and behavioral sciences]
was created simply because it was "politically correct"
and that it is now time to make a correction. This means
that there is little chance the NSF authorizqation from the
Committee will contain an authorization for the Social,
Behvioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate. If the
Committee does not authorize the Directorate, the
Appropriations Committee cannot fund the research programs
it contgains. So scientists must pay close attention to
actions of the Budget, Appropriations and the authorizing
committees.
The Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive
Sciences says that the only way to prevent this is by
writing or calling your representatives and senator's
office to express your disapproval. Also send a copy
of your letter to Robert Walker, George Brown (ranking
minority member of the Science Committee and a likely
ally of behavioral and social scientists), Jerry Lewis
(Chairman of the House Appropriations SubCommittee that
appropriates money for the National Science Foundation).
Also send, fax, or e-mail a copy of your correspondence
to the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and
Cognitive Sciences: FAX: 202-336-6158 e-mail:
federation@apa.org Other information may be received
from the Federation at 202-336-5920. The Federation
will need to know how voluminous their campaign to
get scientists and citizens to write their Congressional
Representatives has turned out to be.

I received the folowing from you a while ago, and immediately
afterwards
another post telling, I thought, me to disregard it because it had been
broad- (instead of narrow-) cast by mistake.
You had earlier notified me of the acceptance of my individual paper so
I

I'd best double check the state of things.
If I _am_ on Liz Hart's and Tom Wissert's panels, (there was a flurry
of
panel posts for a while there & I _may_ have responded
speculatively)
could you remind what what the panel topics are?
