Subject: Another greeting - and invitation to comment...
Hi,
Let me reiterate my greetings to the new LitSci-L list, now being hosted
at
UCLA. The new service will hopefully not seem so different from the old
as
to confuse you. I hope you will also be able to take advantage of the
highly accessible help file and list digests that you can reach and
search
via the Society for Literature & Science Resource Web Page at:
http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/projects/sls/
If you don't have web access, the digests are actually on Gopher. Gopher
to:
gopher.humnet.ucla.edu
(home for UCLA Humanities Division and Departments)
and look in the "Electronic Journals & Digests" menu.
Now that I've numbed you with this dry introduction, let me see if I
can
generate some discussion:
As I'm sure many of you know, one of the most popular features of
Internet
culture is the "FAQ". It stands for "Frequently Asked
Questions," and means
actually "Answers to Frequently Asked Questions." If you have
access to
USENET News, you see innumerable FAQs in the news.answers group, many
of
which are also archived to Web or Gopher sites.
My question: what would be in an FAQ for the Society for Literature
&
Science? How do you provide information about an academic enterprise
like
this, without being too prescriptive or too vague? Is there a way to
divide
up the subject matter of "literature" and "science"
into concise
explanatory units that could be elaborated and polished over time
through
the collective wisdom of this organization? What would it look like?
And
who would like to help make one?
With best wishes for the new year,
Wayne
