Subject: Institutionalization of L&S studies
I am finishing up an article on an encyclopedia on literature and
science,
dealing with "institutionalization" of Literature and Science
Studies. I
would like to hear from any members who are aware of programs or
faculty
groups that constitute sites for L&S Studies, at both the
undergraduate and
graduate levels. I have reviewed the latest History of Science Society
Guide, which provides some good leads but is not at all focused on
L&S
Studies. I would appreciate e-mail from anyone with some leads, at
LSCHACHTERLE@jake.wpi.edu. Thanks.

Subject: call for paper proposals/SLS 1996
Hello, I am new to SLS and the list, and despite the rather late date
am
trying to organize a panel for the 1996 SLS conference
proposed panel topic: New Kinds or Missing Links?
I am seeking papers that address the recent(or earlier)uses of
fictional works as a means of disseminating/ responding to scientific
debates and controversies. I am particularly interested in paleontology
and the contemporary response to both the extinction debates and the
debate surrounding new theories of the Neanderthal/Cro-Magnon
encounter.
papers dealing with the theoretical issues surrounding popular
narratives
written by scientists in other fields and or the critical reception of
these works are also of relevance. If there are any paleontologists on
the
list I would be particularly interested in hearing from you.
Panel topic 2 (in case topic 1 is not of interest to anyone but
myself!)
"Science and Humanities Integrated Curriculum: New models in the
Funding Desert"Seeking paper that address the dwindling funding of
sci/humanities integration
projects. Papers might discuss the impact of new funding policies and
aslo might address new models and institutional strategies for
maintainging
and developing such projects. My thoughts were prompted by having
the NEH/NSF funding for a project (a long time in the making and
involving
a great deal of work and delicate negotiation) disappear weeks before
the
final grant proposal was to be submitted. I have since been considering
alternatives to large funding bodies as the primary support of new and
continuing
projects.
send proposals for either panel by March 12 to:

Subject: Still looking for Presenters
I am trying to put together a panel on gender and current brain research
and
its popularizations. So far want to look at the rhetoric of research
into
women's greater perceptual abilities and their representation in the
ABC
special that aired last year. Additional paper ideas would be welcome.
We
have one member from an English Department and one from media and
communications so far. Remember the abstracts and panels need to be in
by
March 1st so let me know as soon as possible.
